This was recommended by Cooks Illustrated so I tried it.

The cold brewed coffee is very different from hot brewed. My wife and I really like the coffee that this device made.

However, the coffee maker itself is terrible. First, it’s huge, 14+ inches tall and roughly 7-8 inches around. I struggled just to get it in my fridge.

And the product leaks like a sieve when I pour out the extract. I brewed three times with it and always, it leaked.

So I threw it out today and am trying another manufacturer.

Buy these things called T-Sacs, they are meant for brewing tea, but work great for cold brew… get large ones, Size 4. They are like large tea bags. Put your grounds in the T-Sacs (coffee should be loose in the sac), tie a knot in the top, add to container of cold water, and there you have it. If you make a lot of cold brew, use more of the T-Sacs. Wait the 12 hours or so and then toss the T-Sacs. No cheese cloth, no mess. I don’t work for T-Sac, I own 2 cafes, and this is how I make cold brew at home. In our cafes, we use commercial filter bags from Toddy. If you need to make a lot of cold brew. say by the gallons for a party, their filters are the right size.

Let’s see, looks cool…check. Simple to use…check. Makes great coffee…CHECK!! Bought this for my husband who has been a devoted Taster’s Choice instant coffee drinker due to the convenience. I don’t think he’s going back any time soon :-)

The stainless steel filter is what swayed me from the Toddy to the Hourglass. Some people complained about leaks, some did not. Mine leaked significantly. Upon careful observation…(story shortened)…the factory does not always trim down the bowls enough to let the center piece tighten against the rubber gasket. I sanded the lip of each bowl down to the start of the threads. Now there is a tight seal against the gasket. No more leaks! The factory should do a better and more consistent job to eliminate this issue. An alternate solution would be to acquire an extra set of gaskets and use two on each bowl.
